Harbor Department, Morro Bay, California

The City of Morro Bay's Harbor Department is a service-oriented organization providing boater assistance, emergency response, code enforcement, and facilities maintenance for the waterfront and the waters of Morro Bay. The Harbor Department is also involved with resource management for the city's beaches and natural resources, including coordination with state and federal regulatory agencies. The City has a long history of supporting fishing uses and policy to preserve our remaining working waterfront. The City is leading an effort in Central Coast Harbors and fishing groups to cooperate in retaining historic fishing access. In July 2011, Morro Bay published a Morro Bay Community Quota Bank Proposal for the groundfish catch shares to maintain a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable fishery. This effort is rapidly evolving; we anticipate development of a Quota Fund website and initiation of a regional sustainablity planning process in 2012.
